What exactly is Pink Shirt Day? For one day each year in the month of February people get together and wear pink to show that they do not tolerate bullying. How exactly did Pink Shirt Day start? It started in Nova Scotia when a group of teenage boys organized a protest to wear pink in support of a Grade 9 boy that was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. They went and picked up 50 pink tank tops and sent a message out to their classmates letting them know about their plan. The next morning, they handed out the pink shirts in the school’s foyer. After hearing about what those kids had done, CKNW was inspired to help other youth affected by bullying. The idea continued to grow and now has worldwide support and participation. There are a lot of different ways you can get involved. All money raised for Pink Shirt Day goes to programs such as the Kids Help Phone, Boys and Girls Clubs and Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC.
